The lastest alternative to expensive Sprint 750 or F-22 is a beach tri. Fast, inexpensive, and very easy to build......this tent camping, daysailing hotrod uses a modified (raised freeboard) L-7 float for the main hull and a Nacra 5.8 catamaran for the floats and rig, etc.
You can even buy an L-7 rig if you want a more coastal ocean machine. It folds like the L-7, is easily trailered and should cost about $5K complete, depending on what the used Nacra catamaran costs you.
Here are the drawings for the new Beach Cruiser 22. This boat is presently available in kit form and you can build it with sails for less than $8K. It will motor along at approx. 12 kts. with an 8 H.P. 2-stroke and will sail into the teens. Relaxed, DRY sailing with lots of room for hanging out. There is even a design for a "boom" tent for the adventuresome camper. Very quick to launch.....set up takes less than 10 mins. and is much easier than a beach cat.
We are going to build the first Beach Cruiser in Fall '07 right after we launch Minette, the 40' cat, and I'm betting that we can beat any beach cat from trailer to water. |
